Breadth and discovery characterise the Key Stage 3 curriculum at St Swithun’s. Students build on their knowledge of core subjects, English, mathematics and science, in readiness for GCSE level, and they also have opportunities to discover new interests by exploring an array of humanities, languages, classical, creative and technical subjects. |
Girls are encouraged to make the most of this as they encounter new subjects. They find that some of their interests are confirmed and deepened, whilst others are discovered fresh or even sparked rather more unexpectedly.
All students learn English, mathematics and science in Years 7 to 9. An integrated science course is taught in Years 7 and 8 before biology, chemistry and physics are taught as discrete disciplines from Year 9.
Girls study geography, history and religion, philosophy & ethics throughout Key Stage 3. They also learn two modern languages, beginning with French and German in Years 7 and 8, with the option to replace one of those with Spanish from Year 9 before taking at least one modern language to GCSE level. They also learn Latin in the first two years and either study Latin further or take Classical civilisation in Year 9.
Our rich Key Stage 3 curriculum includes an array of creative and technical subjects, with all students studying art, computer science, design & technology, drama, food & textiles and music throughout Years 7 and 8. In Year 9 they are able to make subject selections and take three out of these six subjects for more time each week so that they can pursue their particular interests in greater depth before making firm GCSE choices.
All girls have physical education and games sessions throughout Key Stage 3, and they also follow our PHSE programme, Thrive, and our Stretch enrichment programme.
