We are immensely proud of our warm and welcoming boarding community here at St Swithun's. |
Our boarding ethos reflects our key belief that our school is a happy, secure, friendly, open, kind, trusting and welcoming boarding community.
In our boarding houses, we recognise the power of laughter and happiness in promoting student wellbeing. Fun is a key ingredient of our boarding community. From silent discos on the front lawn to whole boarding Easter egg hunts and roller discos our boarding community values opportunities to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Recent boarding activities have included an old-school sports day with space hopper races, an inter-house sustainability and step challenge and our annual rounders and water fight competitions.
Birthdays and achievements are celebrated as a whole house, and houses are places where strong friendships form, allowing all our students to thrive academically and socially. Our boarders tell us that the boarding houses feel like a big team and our older boarders are kind and approachable students who wholeheartedly welcome them to sit with them during lunchtime and evening supper service.
We pride ourselves on the joyful interactions between students, the effective pastoral care offered by our boarding and welfare team – and the genuine sense of enjoyment and belonging experienced.
Our boarding system is characterised by innovation, and we teach skills to address the challenges facing students in our modern world. For example, we have developed a ‘St Swithun’s Sleep’ programme to address the challenges created by sleeplessness and directly addressing the way that technology affects our sleep. In our boarding houses we have staff and students as trained ‘Sleep Champions’ to promote healthy sleep habits in our community. We also run our own successful ‘Boarders’ Award’, which was shortlisted for the BSA (Boarding Schools Association) boarding innovation award. It focuses on developing boarders by emphasising life-skills from letter writing, meal budgeting and acts of kindness and giving awards for personal development and global and cultural awareness.
We believe that being a part of our boarding community equips our students with life-long skills and the ability to live successfully with others.
As said in the final lines of our ethos,
"St Swithun’s is a place where girls can grow and flourish to become independent young women.”Alice Ludlow
