St Swithun’s boarding staff have strong and effective relationships with our boarders. |
Our whole boarding team works collectively to provide first-class support to all students in our care. Boarders are supported by house staff, heads of year, form tutors, academic staff, the health centre, our full-time on-site school psychologist, the school chaplain and designated welfare staff.
In our boarding houses we have a variety of staff who are responsible for student welfare alongside the wider academic and welfare team: all houses are led by experienced housemistresses/masters who are supported by a resident tutor, house matrons and graduate assistants. Each house has its own unique identity and houses ‘create an environment which supports and encourages the development of the individual’.
Alongside our award-winning pastoral care, students are always able to access additional support from on-site school counsellor and health centre team of four nurses.
We recognise that life at school is a busy and active one: Relaxation time is built into boarding to reinforce that ‘quiet’ time and relaxation is part of a healthy lifestyle. We regularly run popular mediation, yoga and dance activities for our boarders and make a point of celebrating wellbeing initiatives.
Two local Winchester GPs visit the health Centre for appointments twice a week and we work with a mobile dentist and immunisation teams. Boarding students are escorted to medical and dental appointments by a member of house staff.
All boarding staff are first aid trained and, if needed, Hampshire Royal Hospital ‘A & E’ is located a 10 minute drive from school.
Phone time is monitored closely and our student’s hand in their phones long before ‘lights out’ times so that we establish healthy and structured phone habits for life.
