At St Swithun’s we are keen to provide our students with a wide variety of opportunities outside the classroom, not only to enhance learning but also to have fun, as the students develop new friendships and skills. |
In early 2024, sixth-form pupils enjoyed trips to Paris to marvel at some magnificent art pieces and the history behind them. Year 10-11 pupils visited Berlin and were involved in a series of educational activities including visits to the last remaining section of the Berlin wall, the Sachsenhausen memorial and museum, the Brandenburg gate, and the Olympic stadium.
Some trips are slightly closer to home, with the DofE (Duke of Edinburgh) expeditions this year taking place in the New Forest, Dartmoor, and Snowdonia. Some trips are one-off occurrences, whereas others are given a slot annually. For example, the year 10 German Exchange is a huge hit with the girls and is a highlight of the annual calendar. Girls studying geography GCSE have an annual fieldwork trip to Blencathra, whilst the year 11 Spanish GCSE girls have an opportunity to visit San Sebastián to develop their language skills and experience the Spanish way of life. Each year, girls in year 9 visit the Battlefields, year 8 students participate in a study tour of Paris, and year 7 students enjoy a water sports weekend on the IOW.
You will note that some of the trips are specifically linked to GCSE and A level courses, such as biology and geography fieldwork. Others such as language exchanges and visits enable the students to embrace different cultures and practise their language skills. In addition, through the sporting activities and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions the students can gain essential skills and qualities such as resilience, problem-solving and working as a team.
As we continue to broaden our provision of residential trips both at home and abroad, we hope that your daughter will look forward to participating in some of these exciting adventures.
