Sports

At St Swithun's Prep, we understand the importance that sport and exercise play in in supporting a pupil’s long-term mental and physical health, and we recognise the opportunities for social development which arise through sporting activities. The broad range of activities we offer aid the establishment of a culture of healthy competition and a love for physical endeavour, as well as fostering strong, supportive interpersonal relationships between our pupils.

We aim to balance both our desire to promote excellence and our goal for all pupils to realise their full potential in sport by instilling a growth mindset, a sense of fair play and a passion for physical activity from a young age.

From preschool through to year 6, all of our pupils take part in weekly PE, games and swimming sessions, each of which are taught by one or more of our specialist sports teachers.  In year 3 to year 6, pupils also enjoy additional ‘match afternoons’ where girls of all abilities have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills, determination and teamwork in an appropriately competitive environment such as inter-house and inter-school fixtures.   The aim of these afternoons is to promote a healthy sense of friendly competition, support within and between teams and to develop the girls’ understanding of tactics, strategy and general match play.

A sense of success is cruicial to personal development. The breadth of our curriculum, alongside our co-curricular offers, refelcts our commitment to engage all pupils in their physical education whatever their interests, talents or ability level.

Our comprehensive approach goes beyond timetabled lessons to include a variety of lunchtime and after school co-curricular sessions. As pupils move through the school they will have the option to choose from a widening range of age-appropriate activities; the breadth of these offerings encourages all pupils to improve upon their existing skills, develop new ones and to nurture a lifelong love for sport, activity and exercise.
