St Swithun’s students out-perform all other schools in #BeWell survey |
At St Swithun’s we believe that looking after our students' mental health will help them achieve their goals and aspirations. As such, we strive to create an environment in which all girls can flourish, whatever their unique tapestry of strengths and interests.
Measuring and evaluating the impact of our work on student wellbeing is hugely important. Back in December, our L5 (Year 9) and M5 (Year 10) students took part in the #BeeWell survey which has been designed as a gold standard for the measurement of young people’s wellbeing across England. This comprehensive survey gathers the thoughts and feelings of young people each year, to determine trends in their wellbeing and the factors that influence this. The survey was conducted across Hampshire and involved almost 20,000 students in over 75 schools.
St Swithun’s students consistently out-performed all other schools and were recognised as the best performing school in all areas of wellbeing in both year groups.
Self-esteem
Students showed significantly higher levels of self-esteem than others in the study group. Year 9 results:
The Longitudinal data also shows that the self-esteem of our Year 9 students had increased from when they completed the survey in Year 8. This bucks the general trend of the data from all schools which showed a decline.
Psychological Wellbeing
Similarly, for psychological wellbeing our Year 9 students showed significantly higher levels than those in the study group. The data below also shows that the self-esteem of our Year 9 students had also increased from when they completed the survey in Year 8, which again bucked the general trend of the data from all other schools.
We attribute these excellent wellbeing results to a variety of factors including, but not restricted to:
- Excellent relationships with staff – our students reported the highest score for this driver of wellbeing in the #BeeWell survey.
- Offering outstanding pastoral care to our pupils is at the heart of what we do at St. Swithun’s. We aim to create an environment in which all girls can flourish, whatever their unique tapestry of strengths and interests.
- Our bespoke Positive Education programme through which we teach our students how to build resilience, optimism and mental toughness so that they can be the best they can be.
